Gift memories… -

Birthdays and wedding anniversaries,   graduations and special occasions   … are times that we try to be innovative and different.  Especially when it comes to gifting to our loved ones.  Be it our child, sibling ,  spouse , parents or grandchildren..   And if it is a milestone event then we endeavor to gift something different that will always be remembered cherished and held close to the heart.   Some of the common gifts for a landmark birthday will be collages of yesteryear photographs,  mementos like key chain ,  year calendar , table top mugs,  coffee table books etc.

Recently I was very impressed when someone wanted to gift something precious to her grandson who was moving out of the country to study further.    And probably, she also felt that he might take up residency rights over a period of time outside India.  She wanted to give him a very unique and thoughtful gift.   She was known to me and she asked me for an advice.   And we were happy to suggest something, keeping in mind the emotive factor and the closeness she cherished with her grandson.   Like most grandparents do.    On our suggestion,    She collected most of his photographs with her form the time he was a child to what he was now, whatever songs she thought he like, collected every report card from his KG ( and she did enjoy reading it over and over again) to his latest professional certificates, all key papers like his PAN,  Adhaar Card,  Passport etc.,   and got them scanned .  Thoughtfully putting even his horoscope scan ( jathagam) and just about anything that she thought he will need over a period of time. Then with our help,  she created folders and put them all in a hard disk drive .

A few days before his departure,  she requested a date with her grandson.   And booked a table ,  just for the two of them at a restaurant, that he liked dining out.   Stunning the grandson,  least to say.    And at the end,   paid the restaurant bill.   Then,  carefully taking out the hard disk drive wrapped beautifully…  worded I will miss you,   presented it to him with her fragile hands and warm heart.    The grandson was so emotional when we met with him to ask if he liked his grandmother’s gift.   He took papers that were relevant,  but left many papers behind to take at a future date.   Ironically,  when the recent floods in Chennai destroyed all papers,   it was grandma’s data drive which he had, that came to his help…
