Seniors require more care and support as they get older, however, it is important for caregivers and families to understand that caring for a senior doesn’t mean that your life has to stop! With a steady increase in the senior population, families are beginning to understand the importance of respite centers that offer a breather to caregivers.
Getting the Experts into Action
Many families and caregivers aren’t aware of assisted living communities that can offer them the reprieve while not compromising on the care and needs of seniors. There are very good short term care facilities for seniors who need assistance with daily living. Better known as Respite Care, these short-term stay facilities enable families to travel, run errands, or can offer that reprieve-time to avoid burn-out.
Ignorance is Not Bliss!
It is a sad state that not many actually know that such facilities exist and the advantages they provide for families. This at times leaves families with little option when the primary caregiver falls sick, is on leave, or is unable to perform his/her duties. Some families even though are aware of such facilities are reluctant to take the plunge due to a lack of awareness of the benefits on hand.
Arranging Respite Care
Arranging for respite care for elders doesn’t require too much preparation. A brief visit or inquiry will do the job. Get a checklist ready on what you need to ask/check and run through it. It is recommended to contact the community at least a week in advance so that you ensure that they have the space to accommodate your elder. If it is a planned vacation, it is recommended that you book in advance.
Testing it Out
It is recommended that you test the facility before actually waiting for the time of vacation, break, or illness of the caregiver. A physical inspection or a weekend stay arrangement for the elder while you are still around will help you understand the facility better.
